about us

Petralogic is a small, privately owned Geotechnical consulting company based in Christchurch, New Zealand. Our geotechnical engineering and geology expertise means we can cover a wide range of project requirements both large and small. We like to get into the technical detail of projects and think outside the box to offer pragmatic and cost effective solutions for our clients. We primarily work in the Canterbury area but often find ourselves further afield so don't be afraid to ask what we can do and where we may be able to do it!

Joe Gray - CMEngNZ CPEng IntPE(NZ) / APEC Engineer, CE/GE (California)

I grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area, and studied Civil and Geotechnical Engineering at San Diego State University. After graduation, I became a licensed geotechnical engineer in California, and worked on projects that cover the range challenging conditions such as development across active fault lines, liquefaction and soft soils in river and marine environments, landslides and slope stability problems in hillside areas.

I moved to Christchurch after the 2010-2011 Earthquakes to assist in the rebuild effort, and became Chartered Engineer in New Zealand in 2012. I have found the similarities between New Zealand and California terrain very interesting, and the differences in practice (including using the metric system!) to be refreshing.

Mike Pretty - BSc (Geology), MEngNZ

I grew up in the South Island of New Zealand and studied geology at Canterbury University. After graduating, I started my geology career as an underground gold mine Geologist in Western Australia before returning to New Zealand not long before the 2010-2011 Canterbury Earthquakes.

Since then, my professional experience has included subsurface investigations for buildings and land development projects, liquefaction and lateral spreading analyses, rockfall and slope stability assessment, fault studies and fault avoidance zone assessments. I had the opportunity assist with post-earthquake landslide reconnaissance in Nepal, and worked with a great team at NCTIR focusing on landslide and debris flow assessment along the Kaikoura Coast.

Outside of work, I spend a good deal of time trail running in the hills around Christchurch, riding my mountain bike and generally taking any opportunity to get out in the bush.
